Description:

Hospital readmissions add substantial cost to health care. Estimates suggest that 30-day readmissions represent an estimated $16 billion in added cost. This study seeks to identify risk factors that are actionable in an effort to reduce hospital readmission of cancer patients.
Very little research on general cancer readmission rates risk prediction models has been done despite the known significantly higher rates within the population of interest. Additionally, there seems to be very little consensus on what a preventable readmission is, which limits the ability of providers to affect change and decrease readmission rates that their respective center. The proposed study will seek to address the gaps in the current knowledge by utilizing machine learning with data from the electronic health record to identify actionable items to decrease readmission rates in cancer patients.
